Surfing and windsurfing equipment

  • For flights operated by slightly larger aircraft within the small aircraft category, such as the Embraer ER4, only surfing equipment may be accepted (surfboards must not exceed 250cm in length; masts and sails will not be accepted)
  • Considering the varying dimensions of different sports equipment and depending on the type of aircraft, the reservation/check-in of equipment will have to be approved by the Cargo department. Therefore we advise all passengers travelling with sports equipment to contact the call centre  to arrange the booking and check-in procedure.

To check-in and transport surfboards and windsurfing equipment (considered in addition to the normal baggage allowance), you must:

  • Declare the item at the time of booking, and in the event of connecting flights with other carriers you must obtain the permission of the other carrier involved or carriage of the equipment will be restricted to the Alitalia flight leg only
  • Arrive at the check-in desk at least one hour prior to flight departure
  • Pack the equipment in its cases or in such a way that protects the items during loading and unloading

Regulations

The transport of weapons, firearms and ammunition is governed by particular regulations set out under Italian law (Law no. 694, December 23, 1974).
According to article 30 of the public safety laws (Decree no. 773, June 18, 1931) the term weapons includes: personal firearms or any other type of offensive weapon including sharp-edged or sharp-pointed cutting instruments, such as daggers, stiletto knives and the like).

Transportation

Weapons, firearms and ammunition whose transportation follows directions issued by police according to existing rules, must always be booked and communicated to airport staff and may be checked in only as registered baggage and tagged to final destination, according to the following conditions:

  • weapons must be unloaded, dismantled and packed in appropriate, sealed containers
  • ammunition must:
    • be in quantities not exceeding 5 kg. [11lb.] per passenger
    • be packed and protected against sudden movements
    • placed in appropriate metal, wooden or fibre containers, having a safety closure mechanism as well as good capacity to resist sharp jolts and/or fire.
    • only be transported for sporting reasons

It is absolutely prohibited to transport ammunition with incendiary or explosive bullets.

On payment of a fee, Alitalia will make containers available for passengers who need them for small weapons and ammunition, measuring 30 cm. (length) by 22 cm. (width) by 8 cm. (height).
Considering the particular nature of such baggage, specific information will be provided on police regulations as well as any customs formalities.
This will enable you to prepare the required documentation in advance and avoid any delays during your journey.

Weapons and ammunition are never included in the baggage allowance. They must be checked-in with the payment of an extra charge, according to the destination chosen, and they never can exceed 20 Kgs for waepons and 5 Kgs for ammunition.

Transit in Italy

If your flight connects with another one at an Italian airport, customs will check the firearms (outgoing or incoming), even when the firearms are destined for another location within Italy, or tagged to a foreign destination.
Upon arrival, the firearms will be carried by Alitalia personnel (or their representatives) from the aircraft to the airport police station where they will be returned to the owner’s custody.

We ask for your attention and common sense, above all.
On Alitalia flights you can carry any musical instrument that is not longer than 100 cm as registered baggage.
Larger instruments will be sent as goods except the violoncello, which must be booked and paid for to occupy a cabin seat. In this case, the instrument must be carried in a hard case with the following maximum dimensions:

  • 52 cm. length
  • 40 cm. depth
  • 135 cm. height

The entire instrument must comply with these measurements, including the base on which it stands (unless this is detachable).

Check-in for the instrument must take place at least thirty minutes in advance of the set time limit. Aboard, the violoncello must be placed on a seat directly in front of a partition wall. If this is not possible, then on a window seat.
