Regulations
The transport of weapons, firearms and ammunition is governed by particular regulations set out under Italian law (Law no. 694, December 23, 1974).
According to article 30 of the public safety laws (Decree no. 773, June 18, 1931) the term weapons includes: personal firearms or any other type of offensive weapon including sharp-edged or sharp-pointed cutting instruments, such as daggers, stiletto knives and the like).
Transportation
Weapons, firearms and ammunition whose transportation follows directions issued by police according to existing rules, must always be booked and communicated to airport staff and may be checked in only as registered baggage and tagged to final destination, according to the following conditions:
- weapons must be unloaded, dismantled and packed in appropriate, sealed containers
- ammunition must:
- be in quantities not exceeding 5 kg. [11lb.] per passenger
- be packed and protected against sudden movements
- placed in appropriate metal, wooden or fibre containers, having a safety closure mechanism as well as good capacity to resist sharp jolts and/or fire.
- only be transported for sporting reasons
It is absolutely prohibited to transport ammunition with incendiary or explosive bullets.
On payment of a fee, Alitalia will make containers available for passengers who need them for small weapons and ammunition, measuring 30 cm. (length) by 22 cm. (width) by 8 cm. (height).
Considering the particular nature of such baggage, specific information will be provided on police regulations as well as any customs formalities.
This will enable you to prepare the required documentation in advance and avoid any delays during your journey.
Weapons and ammunition are never included in the baggage allowance. They must be checked-in with the payment of an extra charge, according to the destination chosen, and they never can exceed 20 Kgs for waepons and 5 Kgs for ammunition.

Transit in Italy
If your flight connects with another one at an Italian airport, customs will check the firearms (outgoing or incoming), even when the firearms are destined for another location within Italy, or tagged to a foreign destination.
Upon arrival, the firearms will be carried by Alitalia personnel (or their representatives) from the aircraft to the airport police station where they will be returned to the owner’s custody.
