Travelling in Europe
ID card and passport: thanks to the Schengen agreement, the borders of nearly all member states of the European Union have no longer customs control and EU citizens may go around simply with their valid ID for travel abroad.
Full members of the Schengen agreement are:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweeden, plus Iceland and Norway (not belonging to EUc) Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hunghary, Malta, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Cyprus (foreseen entry in 2010), Bulgaria (foreseen entry in 2011), Rumania (foreseen entry in 2011). In EU countries who haven't joined the agreement (e.g. Ireland and United Kingdom), as in countries who aren't EU members, the passport is mandatory, unless there is a bilateral agreement.
Visa: citizens who aren't EU community members must obtain the entry visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country where they're going to.
Procedures for travel to the USA
1) 'Travel without Visa' Program (Visa Waiver Program)
If you are going to the US for tourism or business for less than 90 days and you already have a return ticket, you may travel without a visa, if you have:
- optical barcode passport, issued or renewed before 26 October 2005
- passport with digital picture, issued or renewed between 26October 2005 and 25 October 2006
- electronic passport, issued or renewed as of 26October 2006.
Each family member or member of the same travelling group must have an individual passport, including children and infants, according to the above mentioned criteria.
Countries members of the 'Travel without Visa' program are: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, South Korea, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany,
2) Pre-authorised Travel Permit E.S.T.A. (Electronic System for Travel Authorization)
As of January 12, 2009 the U.S. National Security Department requires all visitors, citizens or natives of member countries of the ‘Travel without Visa Program’ (going to and/or in transit in the USA) A travel pre-authorised permit, called E.S.T.A., to complete over the Internet on the dedicated site.
US authorities do not allow flight boarding without the ESTA permit.
3) Personal data collection with fingerprints or pictures in digital format
Paasengers arriving in the US msut go through a procedure, introduced within the US VISIT Program , to improve US visitors' security. The procedure, done at the normal Immigration desks, foresees personal digital data collection and storage of fingerprints or pictures.
4) Comunication of personal data and temporary address
If you are travelling to or going through the US, Canada or Japan you must supply personal data and temporary address: now you can do it directly online.
